This is going to be a bit of a random post but is the first thing that came to mind this morning when i was thinking of what to blog. I know everybody has this same sort of love/hate relationship with something. Whether its a sports team or a band or a celebrity or whatever, everyone seems to have something that they swear to themselves they dont care about anymore and will never think about again…..until tommorow. For me this thing is the bloody All Blacks. Having grown up in New zealand as I did it isn’t a choice of whether you support them or not, or even if you care about them. The team is an institution. They are blasted all over the media, every day, plating or not. This ensures that even if you hate the sport, if you are living in NZ you know exactly what is going on with the team. Why does everyone care so much? Because every year they are ranked as the number 1 rugby team in the world. They have been number 1 as long as I,ve been alive, and this is a great achievement for a country so small, don’t get me wrong. Our population is the same as Ireland and not only do we dominate in rugby but we are serious contenders in countless other sports aswell. most of these other sports (cycling, rowing, swimming, cricket, netball etc) we (as in NZ) know they are good because they have won, or come close to winning, a major international competition or event. Not the all blacks though. The world cup is the olympics of rugby and they have won it once. IN 1987!!! Which happened to be the first world cup ever. We havent wo it since. Last year we didnt even make it out of the semi’s. So even if we are always ranked as the number 1 team every year what does it mean or matter? Imagine if you were an olympic sprinter, would you rather be the best runner every year for ten years? or an olympic gold medal winner? probably the latter. As to win the medal you have proven yourself when it matters. Until the AB’s win this again they are not the best team. The best team in the world is the team that last won the world cup…
